Phase 0 · Before UC
Entry to both the BCom and Product Design courses runs through University Entrance (UE), set nationally by NZQA. UE is the baseline; the subject choices below are what make this particular pathway smooth rather than a scramble. Tick them off as you confirm them.
Achieved through NCEA Level 3. This is the hard requirement to enrol.
Not required for entry, but they remove the biggest friction point later — the engineering-flavoured Product Design courses.
STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) lets capable Year 12–13 students sit real first-year UC courses while still at school — on campus or by distance — once you've met UE literacy and numeracy and your school signs off. Pass one and it lands on your UC academic record. You mentioned ECON199 and MATH198; they're both smart, but they do very different jobs.
The STAR version of first-year microeconomics — same material as the BCom's core ECON104. It's credit-bearing, so passing it means one of your compulsory business-core courses is already done before you enrol.
MATH198 replaces the old MATH199 from 2026. It's the same full-year university calculus & linear-algebra course for students who excelled at NCEA Level 3 maths, with fees covered by the Faculty of Engineering — but the key difference is that MATH198 carries zero credit. It's purely preparation, not degree points.
Every STAR course UC offers (2025 list; 2026 is being confirmed). Green courses pre-bank a course already in your plan — tick one and it's marked complete in your roadmap. Amber are STEM/skills courses that strengthen this pathway.
Phases 1–3 · The Bachelor of Commerce
This loads pre-selected with the required courses, the recommended major picks and the suggested IPD minor. Courses marked ● Required are mandatory for this exact BCom(I&E) + IPD-minor combination; Pick 1 means choose one from a group; Suggested minor is the recommended 75-point IPD set. The remaining points come from free electives (any UC courses you choose) — rather than guess those for you, the plan validator below the columns checks your selection against every degree rule and tells you exactly what's still needed. What it opens up
The degree and the minor already make you employable across business and design — an unusual combination. The Master's then adds a postgraduate, venture-builder layer on top of that base.
You can scope a market opportunity, run the innovation process, and also sketch, CAD, prototype and cost the actual product. That bridge between "we need a product" and "here's the working prototype and the business case" is exactly where few graduates sit.
You graduate not just with a qualification but with a developed product and a company that has already used the labs, the IP support, and the entrepreneurship centre. The Master's is the runway, not just the credential.

Phase 4 · Postgraduate
You asked for "a Master's in Industrial Product Design where you create a company and leverage the Entrepreneurship Centre and Product Design labs." UC runs two Master's that touch this — and the better fit for the venture goal is probably not the one with "Design" in the title.
Purpose-built for exactly what you described: come in from any background, use the School of Product Design's labs and the UC Centre for Entrepreneurship together, and spend the degree turning your own idea into a real product and company.
The closest match to the literal title "Industrial Product Design Master's", but it's a research degree — a 120-point thesis rather than a venture build. Strong if you want deep design R&D or a PhD pathway.
