What NCEA gets you in the door

Entry to both the BCom and Product Design courses runs through University Entrance (UE), set nationally by NZQA. UE is the baseline; the subject choices below are what make this particular pathway smooth rather than a scramble. Tick them off as you confirm them.

Years 12 & 13

STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) lets capable Year 12–13 students sit real first-year UC courses while still at school — on campus or by distance — once you've met UE literacy and numeracy and your school signs off. Pass one and it lands on your UC academic record. You mentioned ECON199 and MATH198; they're both smart, but they do very different jobs.

The one that de-risks the hard part

MATH198 replaces the old MATH199 from 2026. It's the same full-year university calculus & linear-algebra course for students who excelled at NCEA Level 3 maths, with fees covered by the Faculty of Engineering — but the key difference is that MATH198 carries zero credit. It's purely preparation, not degree points.

Because Freya will be in Wellington for NCEA Level 3, delivery matters: most of the STAR courses that match her degree are Christchurch-only. The big exception is ECON199 — the distance version of microeconomics — which credits as her core ECON104, so it's the one course she can sit from home and bank toward the BCom. Prerequisites shown here are indicative — assembled from UC's published major/minor pages and degree plans. The Product Design (PROD) courses in particular sit inside the Bachelor of Product Design, so some 200/300-level studios may assume earlier PROD papers or be capacity-limited for non-design-majors. The 360-point maths works, but it's tight: the minor and the 255-point Commerce minimum use up nearly every elective slot. Always confirm the live prerequisites in the UC Course Catalogue and book a session with a Business School Student Advisor before enrolling.
